60,000 Workers from EU are here
November 2006
More than 60,000 Eastern European immigrants are working in the Midlands since their countries joined the European Union, according to latest government figures.
Government data showed 63,795 immigrants from Poland and other countries have registered for work in the region since they joined the European Union in May 2004, the second highest number for a single UK area.
More than 23,000 Eastern Europeans were working in administration and business management, while more than 6,000 found work in hospitality and catering and 5000 took on jobs in manufacturing. Nationally the number of Eastern European immigrants to Britain topped the half a million mark for the first time.
The date showed 510,000 immigrants have come to work in the UK, mostly from Poland (63%) Lithuania (11%) and Slovakia (10%)
Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said “The latest Worker Registration Scheme figures show that migrant workers from the accession states are benefiting the UK by filling skills and labour gaps that cannot be met from the UK born population.
However we need to make progress on our immigration reforms and understand the transitional impacts from the last round of accession in 2004 before we take the next step.
That is why we have decided to gradually open the UK’s labour market to citizens of Bulgaria and Romania after the two countries join the European Union in January 2007
The Home Office research used regions as defined by the Royal Mail’s Postal Address Books. “The Midlands” refers to those areas served by the following postal towns, Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Stoke on Trent, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Northampton.
