REC Countering Trade Union Attack
February 2007
The REC External Relations team has been on the front foot in countering the latest trade union attacks on Temporary Agency Work. The REC’s External Relations director Tom Hadley was invited to respond to the Trade Union argument live interviews for Radio 4 and Radio 5 live. The Private Members bill on agency work is scheduled to take place in the House of Commons in early March.
The aim of this legislation would mean that temps would have to be paid the same wage as a “Comparable permanent worker”. The Unions are seeking to extend the right to claim unfair dismissal to temps.
The Unions are still pushing the notion that, whilst “some agency workers are well treated many are not. For them, agency working means discrimination in the workplace and: poorer pay, denial of sick, holiday and overtime pay, and an easy ride for unscrupulous employers”
The REC External Relations team is working hard to counter these misconceptions – in particular through the data that has been generated through the REC’s Industry Research Unit which shows that on the whole, temps are extremely satisfied with their work and the opportunities that the agency model provides.
Ahead of the March debate it is essential that as many members as possible contact their local MP’s and we will be coordinating a campaign through our network of Regional Directors.
REC members can write to their MP directly through www.writetothem.com
