Q & A GRANDPARENTS AND FLEXIBLE WORKING
May 2010
Q & A – GRANDPARENTS AND FLEXIBLE WORKING
Q. An employee who is a grandparent, often takes their grandchild to school. But they have now made a formal request for flexible working. Are we obliged to consider it?
A. Grandparents who occasionally look after a grandchild do not have the statutory right to request a flexible working pattern. So in the majority of cases you will be able to refuse for that reason. However, the right will certainly arise if they are the child’s guardian, ie responsible for bringing them up. In this situation they will have the right to make a request and you should carefully go through your usual procedure. Set this out in a flexible working policy.
Tip. You can ask an employee for more information on the background to their application. This is safer for you than rejecting it outright.
