Q & A - A GRIEVANCE FROM MULTIPLE EMPLOYEES
July 2010
Q & A – A GRIEVANCE FROM MULTIPLE EMPLOYEES
Q. We have been approached by several employees who wish to raise a “collective grievance”. Can we deal with the group’s complaint as a whole, or must we insist that each employee brings a separate one which will of course, be time consuming?
A. The ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures says that multiple grievances should be resolved in accordance with a company’s own procedure. So assuming that yours is non-contractual (which it should be) you won’t have a problem, you can adapt it to suit your needs. We would suggest the following: (1) ask those involved for their written agreement that the grievance be handled “collectively” (2) ask them to appoint a spokesperson who will represent the entire group/ / and (3) require the group to put their grievance in writing and that each complainant signs it. Once this has been done, the spokesperson can meet with their line manager (or other designated manager) and they can follow your current procedure in the normal way.
