More Immigrants than London has
March 2007
More Eastern European immigrants have come to work in the Midlands than in London, the latest government figures reveal.
According to Home Office statistics 71,035 immigrants from the new EU member states applied to work in the region, compared to 70,120 in the capital since the accession countries joined three years ago.
Only Anglia experienced a bigger influx of Eastern European workers than the Midlands, with more that 80,000 moving to the region.
Since 2004, 579,000 people from Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia have come to the UK for work, the Home Office says.
Ian McLaven, company director of MEM Recruitment in Market Square, said most of the people who come to the company looking for work were Eastern European.
He said “I think a lot of them are attracted to London by what they read and see on TV. When they get there, they find the streets are not paved in gold and some of them come up here.
“In Northamptonshire, there are a lot of warehouse distribution centres and there is quite a lot of manufacturing.
“I think it’s quite easy to find that level of work here.”
The Home Office defines the Midlands as Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Stoke on Trent, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Northampton. The majority of immigrant workers over 40,000 – have jobs in the administration, business and management sector.
The second most popular sector is hospitality and catering followed by manufacturing.
